Weedle, Kakuna, Beedrill
You know those nightmare events when you are settling down for sleep, you’re finally comfortable, drifting off, then feel something CRAWL across your leg? You LEAP out of the bed, ripping all the sheets off as you fling whatever touched you across the room and it’s WAY too big for something that should have been in your bed? Yeah Weedle would be that bug. I like it as a design but I know I would hate it in real life.
Meanwhile, Kakuna is a cool pupa. I remember in elementary school, we raised mealworms in order to see metamorphosis. The pupal stage looks just like Kakuna and I don’t remember which I encountered first, but I always thought they looked super sick. However, I also remember that, while you’d expect the pupae to be very still - like little bug shaped beads, they could still suddenly FLEX and THRASH around and it scared the crap out of me. I’m sensing a pattern with this line.
Okay, as you’ll see soon enough, I am a huge poison type fan. As such, I always tried to like Beedrill. And sometimes I even succeeded. But the arm drills have never done it for me. I don’t think there’s really a bee pokemon design at all that I particularly like. Beedrill even has this sort of annoying human-like stance which just makes me wish it looked like a more insectoid version of Q-bee from Darkstalkers.
Spikes on knees is cooler than spikes for hands. All that being said, I don’t hate Beedrill. I even kinda like Beedrill. I just want better for it.
And we actually mostly get it with the Mega Evolution. I don’t love the more robotic look that so many Megas get, but it’s not terrible here. Six wings is a cool look, the more needly vibe is fun, and it looks DANGEROUS. Definitely an improvement on how awkward the normal stage looks.
All of these pokemon would make me feel like something is crawling on me for like fifteen minutes after seeing one and yet I still like them a lot.
